Over the last 18 months, battery cell prices have fallen significantly worldwide. This is due, on the one hand, to lower raw material prices, but also to rising production volumes and fierce competition, particularly between cell manufacturers in the Chinese market. While these low prices are a major challenge for companies looking to enter the battery cell production business, they are creating new or improved product opportunities for battery users. In e-mobility, prices for electric vehicles are falling faster than expected to the level of vehicles with combustion engines. In strategic assessments, not only light trucks but also heavy-duty long-haul trucks with battery-electric drives are showing significant advantages over vehicles with fuel cells and hydrogen. However, at current prices, battery systems can also be used economically in the power system to smooth price differences within a day (‘arbitrage’) in addition to various services in day-to-day business.

The seminar will analyze the state of the art in current battery technologies and the influences on the costs of the cells. In addition, the focus will be on possible future technologies and their strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and risks will be discussed. In addition to variants of the classic lithium-ion batteries, these include sodium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries or solid-state electrolyte batteries.
